The Mumble

Oh, God! What if every moment
of every day, eternity mumbles
a message so urgent, but so exclusive,
so elusive, and so reclusive that
almost no one could even hear it,
let alone be trusted to listen?

Oh, God! What if all but two
of the fistful of people who
can and would decode the mumble
are lost – too lost in this democratic
cacophony, this harried, worried,
and now unruly mob to concentrate?

Oh, God! What if the person who hears
it best – the one who recognized
what it means instantly and completely -
is in some kind of trouble, And I,
who heard it second best,(because someone
has to come in second) but really only
sort-of understands it, am now in charge?

Oh, God! What if I am in charge?
Oh, God! What if I am in charge?
Oh, God! What if I am in charge?
